An African Development Programme With An Innovative New Approach
Welcome to African Development Choices, a major funding and development initiative to improve the lives of 100,000 African children annually. Founded by Kenyan-born Londoner, Moses Tai, we aim to deliver non-existent essential services to underserved African communities.
Why does the world need another African development programme?
“Despite all the investment and international funds put aside for improving facilities, leaders continue to undermine sustainable change.”
Moses has observed a public perception that the issues affecting African communities have been resolved, but they haven’t. Despite all the investment and international funds put aside for improving facilities, leaders continue to undermine sustainable change.
Having grown up in Kenya, Moses has first-hand experience of this. As a child, he didn’t have access to basic community facilities like public toilets and playgrounds and witnessed the devastating impacts of poverty all around him. Moses is now 39 years old and the situation remains the same. He attributes this to poor decision-making by leaders and a lack of consultation with the community. Citizens have low expectations of what can be achieved due to lack of precedence and the lack of effective participation.
How are we different?
“ We will support citizens to participate in making choices that will most benefit their local communities.”
African Development Choices believes that the international community’s focus must change if we want to make a real difference to the lives of millions of suffering children and their families in Africa. Using donations and other sources of funding, we will support citizens to participate in making choices that will most benefit their local communities.
Our primary aim is to work with communities and their leaders to deliver essential public goods and services such as clean water, basic sanitary facilities and child-friendly facilities like playgrounds. We’re challenging the status quo to create a culture of transparency, where citizens are well- informed and can speak with a collective voice that has influence.
The African Development Choices vision
“We will support the local economy and develop a skilled labour force by recruiting local people to manage and deliver each project.”
The ambition is to deliver more than 100 schools and community projects each year, improving the lives of more than 100,000 children in the process. We will support the local economy and develop a skilled labour force by recruiting local people to manage and deliver each project.
Our team in Kenya are already making this vision a reality. In January 2019 we begin work at Nyansakia II DOK Primary School, in Kisii County, Kenya. Working in partnership with the school’s Board of Management, we will build a playground, community well and toilet blocks to serve 700+ children and their families.
How will we fund projects?
“We’re confident that we can set a precedent with our approach and show people around the world what effective development looks like.”
We will be applying to international development funds and seeking donations from individuals, philanthropists, businesses and crowdfunding initiatives to fund our projects.
We’re confident that we can set a precedent with our approach and show people around the world what effective development looks like. We are strategic and transparent in our efforts, with a drive to deliver life-changing
results that will attract funders.
The big launch
“Our website aims to raise awareness…, attract funding and supporters and share updates on our future, current and completed projects.”
It’s no accident that Moses chose to launch African Development Choices and its website www.itsthechoices.org on #GivingTuesday — a day that unites communities and nations across the world to celebrate and support giving
A great deal of work has happened behind the scenes to reach this point and we are excited to now be in the public domain. Our website aims to raise awareness of development issues in Africa, attract funding and supporters and share updates on our future, current and completed projects.
